Well ladies and gentlemen, it’s that time of year once again. It’s hard to believe that I’m spending my second Hanukkah here in Israel. It seems like it was just yesterday that I was celebrating a Hanukkah getaway with my husband at the Dead Sea and witnessing the celebrations of Hanukkah at Jerusalem’s Jaffa Gate throughout the eight nights.

Everywhere you go, you can see here in Israel signs that Hanukkah is about to begin. Decorations in the stores, jelly doughnuts in every bakery and menorahs for sale at every turn. Tonight, December 20, 2011 marks the first of our eight nights of Hanukkah. Just like last year, you can head over to Jaffa Gate where the majority of Jerusalem residents will gather nightly to watch the menorah lighting ceremony and to participate in some outrageously festive song and dance.

Be sure to try out some typical Hanukkah food as well, including an assortment of jelly doughnuts (called sufganiyot) and of course, latkes (fried potato pancakes) and applesauce.

Jerusalem in particular is known to be a great place to spend Hanukkah. Here in the holy city you can opt to take a menorah walk, which is a special tour through some of Jerusalem’s more religious neighborhoods where residents will leave their lit menorahs for you to view in their windows. Imagine an entire neighborhood filled with dazzling menorahs in the windows. Only here in Israel will you see something like this.

Kids love this holiday too because not only do they get gifts for eight nights in a row, but also, they get to play the dreidel game. Wondering what’s at stake? Loads and loads of chocolate gelt.

PICTURES OF THE YEAR 2011

Walk to Work has certainly been the biggest news making activity in 2011. No wonder it was voted by The Economist magazine as number three of the top African stories this year. These protests were against high food and fuel prices. The Police and Army particularly came to the forefront on criticism by Human rights bodies for their excessive force on unarmed peaceful protesters. In total, 10 people were killed through out the walk to work series.

From July 7, 2009, Kampala bombing, security vigilance in Uganda has taken a different turn. Mettle scanners have been erected in almost every corner of Kampala. From discotheques, shopping malls to bars. The threat of Al shabaab remains very much in the thoughts of many. This particular picture was taken by a security detail of President Museveni during a camera check moments before i was cleared to attend President Paul Kagame’s presser at Munyonyo on December 12,2011.I’ve personally had countless checks of this kind this year, a constant reminder of how unsafe we are.

A heart broken Ugandan. A heart broken nation. Uganda’s wait to participate in the African Cup of Nations continues to stretch to well.., three decades and still counting. A win against bitter rivals and neighbours, Kenya would have rewritten that history but it wasn’t meant to be.Instead, a goalless draw attracted angry reactions from the thousands, perhaps millions of Ugandans from every corner of the country who hoped to finally pop a 30 year old champagne.

Here a protester prepares to block a road in Kireka,a suburb of Kampala, Uganda’s capital on April 18,2011.

Opposition leader for Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Kiiza Besigye “installed” himself as the face of the protests.I needed an up-close with the man who involuntarily imposed himself as the face of the walk to work protests and this shot did it for me.

This picture will remain in my memory for as long as i live. With the rumoured death of opposition leader for Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Kiiza Besigye, after a brutal arrest while participating in the walk to work protests, riots engulfed most parts of the city. These protests were against high food and fuel prices.I was taking pictures downtown Kampala that morning where every street was burning with something. The security was struggling to maintain order and looked over stretched. I was moving with a group of six soldiers who were firing point blank at protesters.I was stunned. Within minutes i saw two nearly lifeless bodies being carried onto the middle of the road. They were still alive but without standby ambulance, they slowly breathed their last on a dusty, smokey downtown Kampala.

Paul Kagame, Rwandan President addresses the media at the Commonwealth Resort Hotel Munyonyo on December 12, 2011. Relations between Rwanda and Uganda have been on the ice for a long time. Paul Kagame’s visit follows a similar one by Museveni in July to Rwanda as the two nations try to at least publicly address their strained relations. It was a significant visit being a first in over a half a decade for a country barely a 30 minute flight away.

In total, 10 people were killed through out the walk to work series.I found this particular picture very interesting. This protester was arrested, instructed to take off his shirt and forced to sit in the middle of the road awaiting a police patrol pick up.You could see him bargain with the policeman who seemed to be threatening him with a teargas can he’s holding.

A village woman carries a pot to the market in Lira district, north of Uganda’s capital, Kampala. According to a UN report; In agriculture, sub-Saharan Africa’s most vital economic sector, women contribute 60–80 per cent of labour in food production, both for household consumption and for sale. But while they do most of the work, they lack access to markets and credit. In Uganda, women make up 53 per cent of the labour force, but only sell 11 per cent of the cash crops.

I was in Dar salaam, Tanzania on the invitation of AMEND to shoot some of their projects. AMEND is an organization that focuses on the neglected epidemic of childhood traffic injury in Africa. Part of my duty was to shoot pictures of shanty households of Dar es salaam, while asking them simple questions about road accidents in their neighbourhood.I realised that women in these neighbourhoods are restricted indoors. They wake up, clean the house, compound and remain indoors as the men ventured out to work. This was just one of thousands i encountered.

A displaced boy is seen seated near one of many makeshift houses built since the National Forestry Authority (NFA) and Police forcefully evicted up to 20.000 people in Kiboga and Mubende districts to allocate the land to New Forests Company (NFC) to plant trees as part of a lucrative scramble for arable land that can be used to satisfy the multi-billion dollar carbon trading ponzi scheme, which is worth $1.8 million a year to the company

Walk to Work has certainly been the biggest news making activity in 2011. Of these, 85% who live in rural areas live in absolute poverty according to The Aged Family Uganda (TAFU). Among other challenges the elderly face include; poor access to services and utilities, limited income support, exclusion from development programmes, lack of political representation, Isolation. As a result, this age group has resorted to selling their property, begging, forcing their teenage daughters to marry among others. Despite formal representation provided for in local government, a national Department of Elderly and Disability under the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, these initiatives have had little impact on improving the daily lives of older persons in Uganda.

Here, i was walking around the city asking traders how they were copying up with power shortages. This particular one was Ssentongo Daniel a metal fabricator in Luzira, a Kampala suburb. He told me of how he has failed on several occasions to meet customer deadlines due to power unreliability causing enormous loses for his business. He projects a wider national picture which has been characterised by several protests against UMEME.

To prove his readiness as leader, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’ll try to provoke some sort of crisis on the Korean peninsula in the coming days, especially if word reaches him that there are South Koreans who are jubilant over the news of his father’s death. He was 69.

In a ‘special broadcast’ Monday from the North Korean capital, state media said Kim died of a heart ailment on a train due to a ‘great mental and physical strain’ on Dec. 17 during a ‘high intensity field inspection.’ It said an autopsy was done on Dec. 18 and ‘fully confirmed’ the diagnosis.

Kim is believed to have suffered a stroke in 2008, but he had appeared relatively vigorous in photos and video from recent trips to China and Russia and in numerous trips around the country carefully documented by state media.
Look at the following Story and see how some Kenyan people still think of you….as a Somali

There is this story/article that appeared in one website purporting to speak for Kenyans…Expressing Kenyan views to Kenyans…..as if we are not Kenyans…..They call it Breaking newsKenya…………that keep educating how Somalis have taken over Kenya…..as if Somalis are not Kenyans….and creating animosity within Kenyan Tribes…..FYI, Somalis are also Kenyans. I was saying surely, Circulating such an article beats my mind of How seriously Kenyan people think of us Kenyan Somalis………..

Assume or refuse to assume, believe or never believe, Kenya Somalis and Somalis have been subjected to Ethnic Profiling in Kenya which we will never accept forthwith. The Kenya National Commission on Integration & Truth Commission knows these issues and keeps mum about them for so long…..It needs our response….There is a lot of Somali profiling going on in Kenya……not any other tribe is profiled more in Kenya than Somalis….nor even foreign citizens including Indians, Italians, Nigerians, Ethiopians who settled in Kenya are profiled like us…. Ask Yourself why….

Just recently, The Kenya National Census Mentioned…Kenya Somali in the list of tribe’s census…..There was no mention of Kenya Gikuyus, Kenya Kalenjins…..While not mentiong Kenya Massais, Kenya Luos, Kenya Luhyas etc, The List mentions Kenya Somalis…..Wait a bit….Excuse them, May be, they wanted to differentiate between Kenya Somalis and Somali Somalis…..but that was wrong…That was profiling one community from the rest of Kenya. Why Somalis…..Why not border tribes like Massais….Turkanas….Luos…Luhya etc…Why Somali…….The Somali community owns the third biggest province in Kenya and are number Six in General Population of the Whole Kenya. We Border Somalia where our brothers came from….but many other Tribes border their fellow from other countries…..Massais….are in Kenya and Tanzania….no one profiles them…..Luos are in Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya….No one profiles them…Why Somalis….. But Who cares….This is the cause of worry. The National Cohesion Commision admits there are growing trends of alienating Somalis who are classified as among the Big Six Tribes in Kenya….

Many atimes, Editors from Blogs, Facebook threads from the like of BreakingnewsKenya Site put offensive and bigoted articles about Somalis. In one Instances, from the comments of such a website, came the following Comments from a very angry Kenyan….who belives Somalis must leave Kenya….as if Kenya is for “HIS TRIBE”….

“You Somalians .. you take all the money from canada .. WELFARE Europe .. then you come to build houses in kenya .. im a KENYAN CITIZEN . grew up in eastleigh GO BACK TO SOMALIA . LEAVE MY KENYA ALONE OO . Just messing up my home town . LEAVE US ALONE . please and thank you .”…..

If you read between the Lines………This means that the writer of the comment having read the article, found that Somalis are not Kenyan Citizen and that he wish them to go back to Somalia…He claims Eastleigh is his home and that he doesn’t want to see Somalis im Eastleigh grabbing Land, Buying Land etc. He has or refuse to have a clue that Kenya has almost 3million Somalis as Citizens…..He assumes those are not Kenyan Citizens…..or he is the only one who was born and brought up in Eastleigh…..and forgets that we own our own land in Kenya sio kama yeye…..

Somalis never displaced anyone and they never grabbed anyones’s land, neither did they steal anyone’s wealth. Sometimes, you are amazed that the writer, as in the case of the article, chose to highlight Migori’s Mayor. He is a Migorian, born in Migori, doesn’t he have a right to lead his fellow Migorians if they find him up to the task? How come you forgot to highlight Kisumu Town MP Shakeel Shabir? Is he a Luo? What Basil Criticos who was the former MP for Taita despite being a Greek? What about the Italian who was narrowly defeated in Magarini by Kingi? Is he a Mijikenda? There are so many thousands of Kikuyus and Kambas who have flooded North Eastern Kenya markets and opened business and took over the barbershops, vegetable stalls and other stuff. Do we complain? no…..we appreciate these brave enterprising Kenyans and work with them or do we blame them and even try to subjugate them. Finding excuses in defeatism and blaming others won’t help. Somalis worked hard to be where they are. While there are some miscreants and petty elements, (and every community has that), the majority are genuine people who toiled hard to be where they are.

From the comment came, Mohamed Hersi, One of the few Somalis who speaks for the community………and goes

“Stop the hate speech not all Somalis are pirates and thugs. Somalis have very strong communal set up and they are good in business. Thanks to the Somalis that today kenyans can afford to acess reasonably prized goods. The Somali hate campaign that is building in our country is not helping anyone. We equally have so many Kenyans who earn a living abroad some as illegal immigrants and you would not like them to be singled out for discrimination. We also have so many Kenyan somalis from North eastern who have sold their livetsock to invest in other business lines like import export, real estate etc. Not all the properties in Eastleigh are owned by Somalis from somalia many are owned by hard working kenyan somalis. As Kenyans we should spend more time fighting our own who steal our tax money meant for school kids, maize scandals, we cant even spare land meant for the dead. Somalis have not denied Kenyans anything and let us move away from this scarcity mentality”…

From that concept, we think there are growing tendencies to see Somalis from an ethnic profiling angle yet no one can do anything to Somalis. If the Worst comes to Worst, Everyone will go to his home and nothing is better than Home. We have our home right here in Kenya…Kenya for your information is a country of patched tribal regions to form a unity government. Each tribe has it’s own region…………
